I recently sent an email to Kenwood and thought I should share with everyone.
********************
NB: I REALLY dig the beats on "Pyramidal Vision" and "Joyous Lake". PV always makes me think of Sesame Street for some reason. Anyway, to my questions, I noticed that record was recorded very quickly and sounds nice and raw. How many takes, if you remember, did it take to get those down and were they played with everyone together?
KD: I think on one or two rare occasions we did two or three takes of a given song, but by and large even when we did multiple takes we chose the first take with the powerful life energy and spontenaity as the "keeper"
NB: Also, when ya'll got back together for "Stone Blue", why was Mark Leonard not included.
KD: Hmmm... well James Genus was hired for the session... I don't know why... I had never heard of James Genus before Stone Blue! :-)
He did a great job and I have heard some of his other work subsequently and I am a fan of his bass playing. However, on the other hand, dude, NOTHING can take away the beauty of what Mark Leonard, Delmar Brown, Kenwood Dennard, and Pat Martino accomplished on Joyous Lake! And those road gigs we did back then in 1976 stand as treasures in my memory! Hats off to Mark Leonard. :-)
NB: If I were Mr. leonard I would MORE than jump at the chance to work with Delmar, Pat and You again. I mean, you can't really surround yourself with any better musicians.
KD: thanks for the compliment. Peace, Nick! :-)
Please post these questions on the website www.kenwooddennard.com in the
future so peeps can share! :-)

Comments:DUDES, dudettes, mikes Shijos, Taras Billy Donald-types- groovesages! :-) yo peeps! I just came home from the Herbie Hancock performance here in Boston at Avalon.
Man it was in credible. Strong band with Terry Lynne Carrington and Matt Garrison and Wallace Roney. I was invigorated and moved. It was a long performance and Herbie gave it all to us... the genuine article. He recited poetry touting WISDOM AND PEACE He tickled the ivories like no one on the planet. He has soooo many imitators who offer him the sincerest form of flattery (you diiig! )
He used virtual synths which sounded almost more like a Hohner D6 Clavinet than a Hohner D6 Clavinet itself! :-)
He had a turntablist... Herbie was all that! Looking young, he straddles the millenium like most of us do, but man he does it like no one can. :-)
Now I have to wind down from that and sleep so I can be of service to my students... shhh don't tell them I said that. Will they respect me in the morning???? lol
Billy Donald... nice questions dude. Thanks for the enthusiastic plug. I appreciate it! :-)

Shijo Tara! yes Blackbird singin' in the dead of night" By Bobby McFerrin is amazing. Yes Bobby is very inclusive and considerate compassionate and wise! I studied with him and I performed with him in what turned out to be one of my fondest memories. I played in his band at the Blue Note in NYC, and then Al Jarreau, George Benson and Jon Hendrix came and sat in! It was amazing!!!!!
The Blue Note has a picture of the event, but the drummer's face is blocked out!!! aaaaaagh ... drummers understand that scenario cuz we are in a position of supporting the band. I'm proud to be a drummer!

I LOVE what seem to be new additions to the site; your description of the Boston Pride parade is cool, and reading your inner directives just now helped me totally raise my life-condition and I'm gonna chant!!! If any of y'all ever get the chance to see Bobby McFerrin, or especially attend a workshop with him, I recommend it!!!!!!!!!! I think he has a very, very rare quality; he's as much about inspiring the music out of ME and YOU as he is about expressing his unique talent in mind-blowing performance. I get that from someone we know, too ;-) Love Tara

Hi everyone,
Sometimes i'm wondering if i can keep making music and how its going to happen. latley i ask myself well, who am i making the music for? Not just me and not just the industry. I've been drumming and singing for most of my life. recently i gave myself permission to try the guitar, which has been a big help because when my friends and family get together for little gatherings i can walk around with an acoustic on and play little melodies. everything i can think of, like from elementary school to pop songs to spirituals, etc. it makes people smile and reminds me why I make music.
i just keep making music with the prayer that it be good and healthy and stabilizing for people who experience it.
Just become a source and let the industry reach out to you as if connecting a telephone wire to a switchboard. WHAT?!? :-)
thank you,

Carl Cox Thanks for writing! Doesn't anyone in this forum have positive suggestions about some of the issues raised here? Carl mentions getting gigs and improving his career... Buddhess thank you for your advice... compassion consideration etc. I think those things apply to getting gigs. Hey if you have enough consideration for the vocalist on the gig, Carl for example, he/she/etc/ will prolly call you back for more work! They may also be more prone to recommending you. Carl gettout and Advance! dude! action rocks! make a plan of common sense. Do it! Take out your appointment book and schedule yourself to make good causes!
What goes around comes around...If you go around sitting in and jamming I'll bet more gigs will come around! :-)
Mike that's a nice quote about the mirror. You seem to be a deep cat. Do you have any answers for Carl Cox? Already your name has a ring to it Carl. Soes anyone agree?

do you have advice for Carl Cox how to advance?
Carl I think Eric Deserves congratulations: he just had his first major professional gig! Don't you agree, Carl?
Buddhess I here by stand up for all the considerate guys!
Any considerate guys in here? Please speak up. The times I have been inconsiderate I have paid dearly. I hereby re-determine to advance forward ALWAYS with consideration for others in mind. (K. Dennard)
Let’s take for example the Purple Rain.
To some it’s water, to others, rain.
To some it’s tears from others’ pain.
For many it’s dangerous, because it’s hot
For others it’s fun and still others, not.
Evil can destroy, but not if we win;
The evil and the victor are both within...
...AND WITHOUT...
The great potential for change lies within.
But it’s hard enough to change OURSELVES;
Can we ever hope to change anything else?
Let’s CHANGE and GROW and INSPIRE ONE ANOTHER,
To do our best to understand one another.
Maybe we can learn from one another,
Maybe we can TEACH one another,
But by all means let’s dialogue so that we can REACH one another.
Life has many aspects. Which ever ones we see
Let’s advance together towards true prosperity.
Maybe you think I'm wrong and I think I'm right,
But at least let’s advance through listening and dialogue.
Maybe you disagree: so be it,
If we both take even one step
Towards expanding our understanding,
We’re already advancing anyway, so
Let’s DO IT ...LET’S ADVANCE!
A whirlwind of inescapable misery for some
Overpopulation for others
“What about this overcrowded land?
Life full of poverty. Mercy me.
Let's expand our vision towards understanding and empathy.
Should we change or rearrange?
Or should we let go and go with the flow?
Will somebody else fix it one day?
Does it matter anyway?
For some it's destructive, for some it’s bliss.
For some it’s just a waste of extra time and a kiss
For some it’s a profound human sexuality
To others it’s a sign that the end is near.
Which way do you look at it?
Which ever way that is, LET’S GROW TOGETHER
To see what we can see and be all we can be.
And do our best...TOGETHER! ...Shall we?...
...“CAN WE ALL GET ALONG?”...
Can we create Justice in our environment?
YES?
NO?
MAYBE?
NOW?
SOON?
LATER?
Life has may aspects. Whichever ones we see:
LETS MOVE
LET’S START
LET’S GROW
LET’S GO
LET’S ADVANCE TOGETHER towards peace security, a happy life and prosperity...
...SHALL WE?...
Some of us see life from some of these perspectives.
Some of us see life from ALL of these perspectives...
But ALL of us can advance...
SO...
LET’S DO IT!
...JUST ADVANCE... :-)

Comments:Men can be pretentious or, in a word, vain. Men, they say, tend to feign knowledge when they don't have a clue; they let on to have ability when they do not; they pretend to have money when they are broke; and they try to pass themselves off as great when nothing could be further from the truth. Unfortunately, such pretentiousness is entirely transparent to the sharp eyes of women.

history starts again now. people are the future. I love people! :-)
I feel the "O POVO" spirit! I feel like a citizen of the world because I love the people. I agree with Duke Ellington here:
Peace, Buddhess, this Buddh's for you! :-)
Peace Suave and Maggie! :-)
Interview with Duke Ellington:
Diary! Diary! Tears of amrita stream down my face right now. Now it’s Duke Ellington...His music? Of course... but more so His quote The people ARE my people. I was hoping as I watched Ken Bern’s “Jazz” that the quote I was witnessing Duke start on the screen was the one I knew ...” The people ARE my people.
I was floored. Dukes philosophy is mine. Just to see Duke spontaneously and cooly come up with this quote enabled me to have a very singular and special sense of history.
Here’s one of my favorite quotes from music history.
Q: “You’ve been quoted uhh by saying that you write the music of your people as it sounds to you...Now I uh would you like expound on that a bit?
A: “Listen... my people... now which of my people I mean uh, you know I ‘m uhh several groups you know I’m uh I’m in lessee I’m in the group of the piano players, I’m in the group of the listeners, I’m in the groups of people who have general apreciation of music, I’m in the group of those who aspire to be dilletants, I’m in the group of those who attempt to produce something fit for the plateau, I’m in the group of what uh.. oh yeah those who appreciate Buaujolai and um then of course I’m in the um of course I’ve had such a strong influence I’ve had such a strong influence.. of by the music of the people ...the people . That’s the better word. THE people rather that my people because THE PEOPLE ARE my people
Diary I am DETERMINED... I WANT THE EVERYBODY TO FEEL MY confidence and my inspired conviction that the common people are praiseworthy and that there is profound joy in respecting and feeling a bond with all people.
I am so doggone committed. I’m inspired by Duke.
What do you think , people?
Do you wanna join the dialogue? :-)
Peace! :-)

Hi all,
Just want to reiterate and affirm the four freedoms as put forth by Duke Ellington in 1969:
1) Freedom from Hate
2) Freedom from self pity
3) Freedom fear of doing something that would help someone else more than it might help myself
4) Freedom from the kind of pride that would make me feel that i am better than another.
Maybe there are or more than four? i hope you are all well and healthy and that i might make good music with any/all of you. Hi Kenwood.
cheers,
