Kenwood, t'was awesome hanging out with you at KOSA this week. Justin landed happily at T-camp, and I'm settling down to some recording sessions this week with my twin brother (Bob) here in th4e Pioneer Valley. Your website is great. I was trying to find the site you told me about (?jalgunisings.com?) but I must have that wrong (should have borrowed your pencil again and written it down). shoot me over the url when you have a minute, I'd love to check it out and try and make one of the M-Lounge dates in late August. Thanks for all, specially the inspiration and sharin the knowledge. Bill Cummings (Electric Billy Land) PS: I see you have a zendrum in the photo on your webpage. I also play ZD, and had mine with me in the dorm room @ KOSA, triggering Battery, LIVE & Reason from my Laptop. Now I wish I had broken it out. Definitely next time :-)

Hi Kenwood, my name is Neil Bettencourt. I'm a drum professor in Santa Cruz, CA. I just wanted to thank you for an experience that happened back in the 80's....you were playing at the catalyst night club with Jaco Pastorius. I recognized you before the show from your photo that is on the back of the Brand-X livestock album. I remember you were really surprised about that!! Anyway, we talked for a bit, and I mentioned odd-time polyrhythms....you proceeded to play your auto harp in one time signature, (very syncopated) while you extracted a "clicky" sound from your throat. This was so cool Kenwood!! I never forgot that, and it served as a great source of inspiration to further myself as a drummer. I currently have 15 students that come to my home here in Santa Cruz every week and polyrhythms is definitely a topic!! Thanks. Neil

This is the response that I received from an email I sent to Mr. Dennard. The "**" are his responses. Advise like this is priceless. If there is anyone out there with the same questions that I have, I hope these can help you. Thank you again Mr. Dennard. << Mr. Dennard, My name is Shawn Elsbernd. I saw you in Columbus a few years back and you blew me away. **wow that's cool thanks for reminding me... hmm was that with Brand x? I'm a teacher six days a week and drummer for hire in the area. I want to expand work with national touring and or recording acts. I've checked out referral sevices but haven't gotten any results. Do you have a manager? **No Are there managers that look for work for drummers? **hmmm maybe, but often a manager has more than one client which might indeed include singers or other instrumentalists. Usually managers look for artists who make enough money already as a recording artist so that the manager knows the artist is a dependable source of livelyhood. **Sometimes artists hire family friends girlfriends or wives etc to assist until they get a manager... sometimes artists manage themselves until they attract a manager... sometimes a small manager can work to score a bigger manager. If so, how do I get a hold of one. **I recommend the musician's handbook and "This Business of Music" **Times when I've had a manager were times when I managed myself and got enough gigs and momentum to land a manager. I'm already professional here in Cincy but I would like to know how to get into a better situation. I flew out to L.A. and had a lesson with Zoro. His advice was to move. I plan on doing this but is there something I can do now, today? **sure. But only you know what things you are lacking in in terms of promotion packaging/ resumee/ punctuality / accessibility by phone etc. **only you can tell what you can do in terms of relationships with people in the business/ **frugality / **I think that if you kick butt right where you are it will give you experience you need and momentum and money you need to re-create your success in a bigger market. I am the easiest musician to work with and I love playing. Everything. Thank You for Your Time sHAWN >> **Do you know what Cincinnati demands?I think the law of supply and demand can land you work! **Good luck **Why do you have to move, when you can record a cd which can move for you? on the internet... via visitations and mail... have you ever been to the NAMM show? **Peace! :-) **good luck my friend...`

Good Morning Kenwood, Just Advance shows what we can do as we keep moving. The website is just incredible! Sometimes People do not understand the process of advancing. You keep on moving. Move the energy . You go left you go right and then you go straight to where you dream. It is the process of becoming. Anyone can become their dreams if you Just Advance. For today for some of us that might just mean getting up early and getting something to drink for others it may mean saying something nice to someone or changing a habit that does not enable us with joy. Just for today do something fun, work with intergity and bond with appreciation to a living thing.

Writings of Nichiren Daishonin "The most important thing in practicing the buddhist teachings is to follow and uphold the Buddha's golden words, not the opinions of others" "Even the darkness becomes bright when a lantern is lit, and even muddy water becomes clear when the moon shines on it. Can anything exceed the sun and moon in brightness? Can anything surpass the lotus flower in purity? The Lotus Sutra is the sun and moon and the lotus flower. Therefore it is called the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law. Nichiren, too, is like the sun and moon and the lotus flower. If the water of your faith is clear, the moon of blessings will surely cast its reflection on it and protect you." "Therefore, we know that the prayers offered by a practitioner of the Lotus Sutra will be answered just as an echo answers a sound, as a shadow follows a form, as the reflection of the moon appears in clear water, as a mirror collects dewdrops, as a magnet attracts iron, as amber attracts particles of dust, or as a clear mirror reflects the color of an object." Kenwood, thanks for being my echo, my shadow and my reflection.

yooooodig! Welcome to all genuine grittologicalgroovemonstermerchants. Please let us have no unfunky personal attacks advertised on this site. This means you Jewel, I checked out your site and I see that it expressly engages in personal attacks regarding body odor etc... While I support your right to free speech, I would appreciate it if you do NOT come here diverting people to a wbsite which expressly engages in personal attacks...I want to keep this funky site funky in a positive way not a personally attacking manner. If you want to discuss someone's body odor, let's talk about the kind that comes from giving one's wholehearted best . There is a genuine funky funk that comes from practicing/playing music with all one's heart....Let's not talk about the kind that is a mere defamatory attack. As human beings, I feel it is easy to personally attack each other. Let us refrain together! I do not despise you. Let's use this site for constructive fairminded dialogue. Jewel, I feel your advertisement does not lend itself to fairminded dialogue. There isn't even an individual on the other end of your hypertext... just a site. About a year ago, someone brought up a fellow drummer's name and tried to compliment me by tearing down the other drummer. I disagreed with that tactic. I let it be known then and it hasn't happened since. The writer agreed with me in the end. I spend my hard earned money and time on this here site to lend emotional support and spread encouragement and share cameraderie and transcend boundaries among people around the world and to provide a forum for others to spread encouragement regarding advancing the cause of peace and happiness especially through music and particularly drumming.so let's do it. Let's advance. SARA thanks for your kind comments KASS ... humble thank you for your support! :) KYLE thank you for your interest. BARRY, ty. :-) FELIX dude it's amazing you found me all the way from when we were kidz. Dam... I wuz 14 when you met me? Thank you for brightening up this site. :-) KEN SERIO, I whole heartedly agree. I appreciate your input. You and I may or may not have the same spiritual practice, but we come together as people who respect and support each other regardless. I find that beautiful. I also find it beautiful when the people of various nations exert their right to peaceful protest regardless of what government they live with. I find it beautiful when people on this site come together in faiminded dialogue regardless of what religion they live with. On this site I promote the advance of the people. The advance of justice. Let's be the people who refuse to denigrate one another just because of differences. Let's transcend our differences and be like fish in the water; two wings of a bird Or a song of sheer harmony the world has never heard. I can see that We’re all in this together, but we’re drifting apart. Let’s stop this insanity and make a brand new start. Even if we should sometimes happen to part, Let’s keep dialogue alive; Let’s open up our hearts. From a greater perspective every day Let’s transcend our differences and pave the way for peace And happiness throughout the world; We each need each other; every man woman boy and girl. Let’s develop our indi-viduality Our fullest potential and creativity. Let’s march to the drumbeat of our deepest hearts And unite together so we all can do our part. When we then come together and sing our song, That’s when the one in a million becomes one million strong. Funkypeoplewhosincerelybelieveinthegroovingofdiversepeoples: Let's advance! :-) Is anybody out there :*-) Can we all get along? Let's develop and pursue a vision of beauty :-) -and to you Jewel, here is my resonse :-) Just Advance (K. Dennard) Let’s take for example the Purple Rain. To some it’s water, to others, rain. To some it’s tears from others’ pain. For many it’s dangerous, because it’s hot For others it’s fun and still others, not. Evil can destroy, but not if we win; The evil and the victor are both within... ...AND WITHOUT... The great potential for change lies within. But it’s hard enough to change OURSELVES; Can we ever hope to change anything else? Let’s CHANGE and GROW and INSPIRE ONE ANOTHER, To do our best to understand one another. Maybe we can learn from one another, Maybe we can TEACH one another, But by all means let’s dialogue so that we can REACH one another. Life has many aspects. Which ever ones we see Let’s advance together towards true prosperity. Maybe you think I'm wrong and I think I'm right, But at least let’s advance through listening and dialogue. Maybe you disagree: so be it, If we both take even one step Towards expanding our understanding, We’re already advancing anyway, so Let’s DO IT ...LET’S ADVANCE! A whirlwind of inescapable misery for some Overpopulation for others “What about this overcrowded land? Life full of poverty. Mercy me. Let's expand our vision towards understanding and empathy. Should we change or rearrange? Or should we let go and go with the flow? Will somebody else fix it one day? Does it matter anyway? For some it's destructive, for some it’s bliss. For some it’s just a waste of extra time and a kiss For some it’s a profound human sexuality To others it’s a sign that the end is near. Which way do you look at it? Which ever way that is, LET’S GROW TOGETHER To see what we can see and be all we can be. And do our best...TOGETHER! ...Shall we?... ...“CAN WE ALL GET ALONG?”... Can we create Justice in our environment? YES? NO? MAYBE? NOW? SOON? LATER? Life has may aspects. Whichever ones we see: LETS MOVE LET’S START LET’S GROW LET’S GO LET’S ADVANCE TOGETHER towards peace security, a happy life and prosperity... ...SHALL WE?... Some of us see life from some of these perspectives. Some of us see life from ALL of these perspectives... But ALL of us can advance... SO... LET’S DO IT! ...JUST ADVANCE... :-) K. DENNARD (Tokyo ‘’92) peace ,y’all! :-)

Dude, so sorry don't mean to hog space here but I dind't see you're comments include me to Danielle. Yes Danielle, the Soul Intentions were the awesomest in Woody was kicking at 14 years old!! They did everything 50's rock and roll, 60's classic rock, Santana's Jingo Evil Ways Black Magic Woman, Billy guitar was awesome could play every lick just like Carlos. Ray sax and Jimmy trumpet ruled over every band on brass two against the world no one kicked their butts. Melvin bass was awesome doing Edgar Winters (?) Frankenstein, but my personal favorite was when they played Grand Funk Railroad Closer to Home. Blue singing Motown better than Motown, And you just had to hear Woody on Santana's Soul Sacrifice and Frankie on organ. And they could lick it like the original recording. Those were the days of travelling to high school gigs and competing in the band battles. And these guys were just teenagers!! And then when I was in college me and a buddy came to the city caught Woody with Pat Martino playing behind then headliner Lenny White post Return To Forever, and my buddy said Woody ruled - hows dat!?! Woody if I ever run into him again I'll have to tell my former classmate Stanley Jordan about you, what a team! Love, Faith, and Happiness dude. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!!!

Hey Kenwood, you really play great man. I'm practicing the finger control technique and I ran into Art Verdi's web site and he has new videos of his left hand playing unaccented eighth note triplets up close at speeds over 200.(artverdi.com) This cat held the world's fastest drummer record breakin Johnny Rabb's record. I can't understand if the dude is moving the stick with one finger or two. If you would explan this I would appreciate it. I was told in an email that his son took candid shots of Art goin around the tubs and asked Art if he would put them on his site. Art wants to put something up a little more musical in the future. These shots is just to give dudes a better idea of cross stickin stuff. The cat's site is really helping me move my fingers without movin my wrist. I never had a chance to see finger stuff movin that fast up close like that. The dudes I know don't have chops like that. This stuff really motivates me to practice more finger control. Lots a luck man, Nick

Have we met? U know anybody who wants to translate a page so I can have an Italian page on the website? n/p if not u still the ma'am Leon Aucoin! Thanks for the words. Yeah man I tell you Newfoundland has changed my outlook on the world! People need to know the beauty of Newfoundland. Leon people might not know what we did in Newfoundland. Please be kind enough to tell them one or two experiences if you like... :-) I just remember how much fun it was u teaching me the National Anthem. Leon was part of my Real Thing trio when I performed in Newfoundland. Kyle: OK I'll say some words about the freehand technique. The 5th gear is the Woodstroke techniqe which sounds like a single stroke roll but only uses one hand. The 6th gear sounds like a fast double stroke roll but only uses one hand. Soundz like you may be referring to the 6th gear technique when you refer to the "free hand technique" I will post a lesson on my "Gear" System as soon as possible. I am proud that many of my students use this system and have used it way back to Tony Thompson of Chic and Power Station. Any one remember him? soul drums: dude who are u? Thanks for visiting. Mike Mckendrick thanks for the kind words. What did u get out of my visit to Berklee in L.A. ? Do u remember the 9 brain technique? Felix, can u send me your picture? I don't recall your face. Hi! may i say that you're an incredible drummer and inspiration. I was browsing the guestbook (although i didn't get to read all of it) and i say joe magliaci's question in 2000 (March i think) regarding the freehand technique. I too have been interested in this. It seems that you didnt answer the question. I understand that you may resent it as technique should not be the foremost focus of a drummer, but i think it would have been polite to have at least addressed the question whether telling him what he wanted to hear or not. I recognize that this could easily have been an oversight. Perhaps then, you could answer it now? Thank you.

Thanks for being a friend and look forward to your visit in Newfoundland A word or two for you Unlimited Friendliness This is the path for the seeker of wisdom, who looks to the good and seeks the place of peace. Strenuous, upright and truly straight, without conceit of self, may we be contented and free from cares and not submerged in worldly matters. May our senses be controlled. may we be wise but not puffed up, and may possessions not concern us. even for our loved ones. May we do nothing mean spirited or that would trouble the wise. may all beings be happy and at ease. may we be joyous and live in safe times. All beings, whether weak or strong, omitting none; In high, middle or low realms of existence; small or great, visible or invisible; near or far away; born or to be born, may all beings be happy and at ease.

I recently sent an email to Kenwood and thought I should share with everyone. ******************** NB: I REALLY dig the beats on "Pyramidal Vision" and "Joyous Lake". PV always makes me think of Sesame Street for some reason. Anyway, to my questions, I noticed that record was recorded very quickly and sounds nice and raw. How many takes, if you remember, did it take to get those down and were they played with everyone together? KD: I think on one or two rare occasions we did two or three takes of a given song, but by and large even when we did multiple takes we chose the first take with the powerful life energy and spontenaity as the "keeper" NB: Also, when ya'll got back together for "Stone Blue", why was Mark Leonard not included. KD: Hmmm... well James Genus was hired for the session... I don't know why... I had never heard of James Genus before Stone Blue! :-) He did a great job and I have heard some of his other work subsequently and I am a fan of his bass playing. However, on the other hand, dude, NOTHING can take away the beauty of what Mark Leonard, Delmar Brown, Kenwood Dennard, and Pat Martino accomplished on Joyous Lake! And those road gigs we did back then in 1976 stand as treasures in my memory! Hats off to Mark Leonard. :-) NB: If I were Mr. leonard I would MORE than jump at the chance to work with Delmar, Pat and You again. I mean, you can't really surround yourself with any better musicians. KD: thanks for the compliment. Peace, Nick! :-) Please post these questions on the website www.kenwooddennard.com in the future so peeps can share! :-) ******************** I want to thank you again for offering your honest experiences here. You give us a great deal of information and we are all grateful.

DUDES, dudettes, mikes Shijos, Taras Billy Donald-types- groovesages! :-) yo peeps! I just came home from the Herbie Hancock performance here in Boston at Avalon. Man it was in credible. Strong band with Terry Lynne Carrington and Matt Garrison and Wallace Roney. I was invigorated and moved. It was a long performance and Herbie gave it all to us... the genuine article. He recited poetry touting WISDOM AND PEACE He tickled the ivories like no one on the planet. He has soooo many imitators who offer him the sincerest form of flattery (you diiig! ) He used virtual synths which sounded almost more like a Hohner D6 Clavinet than a Hohner D6 Clavinet itself! :-) He had a turntablist... Herbie was all that! Looking young, he straddles the millenium like most of us do, but man he does it like no one can. :-) Now I have to wind down from that and sleep so I can be of service to my students... shhh don't tell them I said that. Will they respect me in the morning???? lol Billy Donald... nice questions dude. Thanks for the enthusiastic plug. I appreciate it! :-) Tara. sister! Shijo Tara! yes Blackbird singin' in the dead of night" By Bobby McFerrin is amazing. Yes Bobby is very inclusive and considerate compassionate and wise! I studied with him and I performed with him in what turned out to be one of my fondest memories. I played in his band at the Blue Note in NYC, and then Al Jarreau, George Benson and Jon Hendrix came and sat in! It was amazing!!!!! The Blue Note has a picture of the event, but the drummer's face is blocked out!!! aaaaaagh ... drummers understand that scenario cuz we are in a position of supporting the band. I'm proud to be a drummer! Peace! y'all! Mike Migliozzi I play to create a groove ! Harmony! dance! brother hood with people like u! Peace y'all! :-)

Hi Kenwood!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE what seem to be new additions to the site; your description of the Boston Pride parade is cool, and reading your inner directives just now helped me totally raise my life-condition and I'm gonna chant!!! If any of y'all ever get the chance to see Bobby McFerrin, or especially attend a workshop with him, I recommend it!!!!!!!!!! I think he has a very, very rare quality; he's as much about inspiring the music out of ME and YOU as he is about expressing his unique talent in mind-blowing performance. I get that from someone we know, too ;-) Love Tara

Hi everyone, Sometimes i'm wondering if i can keep making music and how its going to happen. latley i ask myself well, who am i making the music for? Not just me and not just the industry. I've been drumming and singing for most of my life. recently i gave myself permission to try the guitar, which has been a big help because when my friends and family get together for little gatherings i can walk around with an acoustic on and play little melodies. everything i can think of, like from elementary school to pop songs to spirituals, etc. it makes people smile and reminds me why I make music. i just keep making music with the prayer that it be good and healthy and stabilizing for people who experience it. Just become a source and let the industry reach out to you as if connecting a telephone wire to a switchboard. WHAT?!? :-) thank you, Michael migz

Carl Cox Thanks for writing! Doesn't anyone in this forum have positive suggestions about some of the issues raised here? Carl mentions getting gigs and improving his career... Buddhess thank you for your advice... compassion consideration etc. I think those things apply to getting gigs. Hey if you have enough consideration for the vocalist on the gig, Carl for example, he/she/etc/ will prolly call you back for more work! They may also be more prone to recommending you. Carl gettout and Advance! dude! action rocks! make a plan of common sense. Do it! Take out your appointment book and schedule yourself to make good causes! What goes around comes around...If you go around sitting in and jamming I'll bet more gigs will come around! :-) Mike that's a nice quote about the mirror. You seem to be a deep cat. Do you have any answers for Carl Cox? Already your name has a ring to it Carl. Soes anyone agree? Neil??? ???????? ???????? ?????????? ??????? dude! Is that the Neil I think it is ? ::passing out:: ::waking up:: dude! where are you? Still in Newgurgh New York was it? Have you seen Bones? Buddhess thanks again for the advice. Happy Valentines day to you too. Hey you see those valentines hearts in the picture on this Just Advance World Forum page? Those are Valentines hearts on Valentines Day in 1994 :-) Eric Pujar! u r de man . friggin' excellent! what a traveller you are in da realm of the universal energy of friendship and music! Dude you ROCK! How was the gig? do you have advice for Carl Cox how to advance? Carl I think Eric Deserves congratulations: he just had his first major professional gig! Don't you agree, Carl? Buddhess I here by stand up for all the considerate guys! Any considerate guys in here? Please speak up. The times I have been inconsiderate I have paid dearly. I hereby re-determine to advance forward ALWAYS with consideration for others in mind. If I advance with consideration, then my advance will have the power of JUSTICE! It will be a JUST ADVANCE!!!!!!! :-) LET'S ROCK! WE NEED EACH OTHER! EREEEEEK IS MY WITNESS TOGETHER LET'S ADVANCE. Just Advance (K. :-) K. Men can be pretentious or, in a word, vain. Men, they say, tend to feign knowledge when they don't have a clue; they let on to have ability when they do not; they pretend to have money when they are broke; and they try to pass themselves off as great when nothing could be further from the truth. Unfortunately, such pretentiousness is entirely transparent to the sharp eyes of women. Daisku Ikeda, "Faith Into Action", p. 52

I love people! :-) I feel the "O POVO" spirit! I feel like a citizen of the world because I love the people. I agree with Duke Ellington here: Peace, Buddhess, this Buddh's for you! :-) Peace Suave and Maggie! :-) Interview with Duke Ellington: Diary! Diary! Tears of amrita stream down my face right now. Now it’s Duke Ellington...His music? Of course... but more so His quote The people ARE my people. I was hoping as I watched Ken Bern’s “Jazz” that the quote I was witnessing Duke start on the screen was the one I knew ...” The people ARE my people. I was floored. Dukes philosophy is mine. Just to see Duke spontaneously and cooly come up with this quote enabled me to have a very singular and special sense of history. Here’s one of my favorite quotes from music history. Q: “You’ve been quoted uhh by saying that you write the music of your people as it sounds to you...Now I uh would you like expound on that a bit? A: “Listen... my people... now which of my people I mean uh, you know I ‘m uhh several groups you know I’m uh I’m in lessee I’m in the group of the piano players, I’m in the group of the listeners, I’m in the groups of people who have general apreciation of music, I’m in the group of those who aspire to be dilletants, I’m in the group of those who attempt to produce something fit for the plateau, I’m in the group of what uh.. oh yeah those who appreciate Buaujolai and um then of course I’m in the um of course I’ve had such a strong influence I’ve had such a strong influence.. of by the music of the people ...the people . That’s the better word. THE people rather that my people because THE PEOPLE ARE my people Diary I am DETERMINED... I WANT THE EVERYBODY TO FEEL MY confidence and my inspired conviction that the common people are praiseworthy and that there is profound joy in respecting and feeling a bond with all people. I am so doggone committed. I’m inspired by Duke. What do you think , people? Do you wanna join the dialogue? :-) Peace! :-)

Hi all, Just want to reiterate and affirm the four freedoms as put forth by Duke Ellington in 1969: 1) Freedom from Hate 2) Freedom from self pity 3) Freedom fear of doing something that would help someone else more than it might help myself 4) Freedom from the kind of pride that would make me feel that i am better than another. Maybe there are or more than four? i hope you are all well and healthy and that i might make good music with any/all of you. Hi Kenwood. cheers, Michael migz
