I recently sent an email to Kenwood and thought I should share with everyone.
********************
NB: I REALLY dig the beats on "Pyramidal Vision" and "Joyous Lake". PV always makes me think of Sesame Street for some reason. Anyway, to my questions, I noticed that record was recorded very quickly and sounds nice and raw. How many takes, if you remember, did it take to get those down and were they played with everyone together?
KD: I think on one or two rare occasions we did two or three takes of a given song, but by and large even when we did multiple takes we chose the first take with the powerful life energy and spontenaity as the "keeper"
NB: Also, when ya'll got back together for "Stone Blue", why was Mark Leonard not included.
KD: Hmmm... well James Genus was hired for the session... I don't know why... I had never heard of James Genus before Stone Blue! :-)
He did a great job and I have heard some of his other work subsequently and I am a fan of his bass playing. However, on the other hand, dude, NOTHING can take away the beauty of what Mark Leonard, Delmar Brown, Kenwood Dennard, and Pat Martino accomplished on Joyous Lake! And those road gigs we did back then in 1976 stand as treasures in my memory! Hats off to Mark Leonard. :-)
NB: If I were Mr. leonard I would MORE than jump at the chance to work with Delmar, Pat and You again. I mean, you can't really surround yourself with any better musicians.
KD: thanks for the compliment. Peace, Nick! :-)
Please post these questions on the website www.kenwooddennard.com in the
future so peeps can share! :-)

Comments:DUDES, dudettes, mikes Shijos, Taras Billy Donald-types- groovesages! :-) yo peeps! I just came home from the Herbie Hancock performance here in Boston at Avalon.
Man it was in credible. Strong band with Terry Lynne Carrington and Matt Garrison and Wallace Roney. I was invigorated and moved. It was a long performance and Herbie gave it all to us... the genuine article. He recited poetry touting WISDOM AND PEACE He tickled the ivories like no one on the planet. He has soooo many imitators who offer him the sincerest form of flattery (you diiig! )
He used virtual synths which sounded almost more like a Hohner D6 Clavinet than a Hohner D6 Clavinet itself! :-)
He had a turntablist... Herbie was all that! Looking young, he straddles the millenium like most of us do, but man he does it like no one can. :-)
Now I have to wind down from that and sleep so I can be of service to my students... shhh don't tell them I said that. Will they respect me in the morning???? lol
Billy Donald... nice questions dude. Thanks for the enthusiastic plug. I appreciate it! :-)

Shijo Tara! yes Blackbird singin' in the dead of night" By Bobby McFerrin is amazing. Yes Bobby is very inclusive and considerate compassionate and wise! I studied with him and I performed with him in what turned out to be one of my fondest memories. I played in his band at the Blue Note in NYC, and then Al Jarreau, George Benson and Jon Hendrix came and sat in! It was amazing!!!!!
The Blue Note has a picture of the event, but the drummer's face is blocked out!!! aaaaaagh ... drummers understand that scenario cuz we are in a position of supporting the band. I'm proud to be a drummer!

I LOVE what seem to be new additions to the site; your description of the Boston Pride parade is cool, and reading your inner directives just now helped me totally raise my life-condition and I'm gonna chant!!! If any of y'all ever get the chance to see Bobby McFerrin, or especially attend a workshop with him, I recommend it!!!!!!!!!! I think he has a very, very rare quality; he's as much about inspiring the music out of ME and YOU as he is about expressing his unique talent in mind-blowing performance. I get that from someone we know, too ;-) Love Tara

Hi everyone,
Sometimes i'm wondering if i can keep making music and how its going to happen. latley i ask myself well, who am i making the music for? Not just me and not just the industry. I've been drumming and singing for most of my life. recently i gave myself permission to try the guitar, which has been a big help because when my friends and family get together for little gatherings i can walk around with an acoustic on and play little melodies. everything i can think of, like from elementary school to pop songs to spirituals, etc. it makes people smile and reminds me why I make music.
i just keep making music with the prayer that it be good and healthy and stabilizing for people who experience it.
Just become a source and let the industry reach out to you as if connecting a telephone wire to a switchboard. WHAT?!? :-)
thank you,

Carl Cox Thanks for writing! Doesn't anyone in this forum have positive suggestions about some of the issues raised here? Carl mentions getting gigs and improving his career... Buddhess thank you for your advice... compassion consideration etc. I think those things apply to getting gigs. Hey if you have enough consideration for the vocalist on the gig, Carl for example, he/she/etc/ will prolly call you back for more work! They may also be more prone to recommending you. Carl gettout and Advance! dude! action rocks! make a plan of common sense. Do it! Take out your appointment book and schedule yourself to make good causes!
What goes around comes around...If you go around sitting in and jamming I'll bet more gigs will come around! :-)
Mike that's a nice quote about the mirror. You seem to be a deep cat. Do you have any answers for Carl Cox? Already your name has a ring to it Carl. Soes anyone agree?

do you have advice for Carl Cox how to advance?
Carl I think Eric Deserves congratulations: he just had his first major professional gig! Don't you agree, Carl?
Buddhess I here by stand up for all the considerate guys!
Any considerate guys in here? Please speak up. The times I have been inconsiderate I have paid dearly. I hereby re-determine to advance forward ALWAYS with consideration for others in mind. (K. Dennard)
Let’s take for example the Purple Rain.
To some it’s water, to others, rain.
To some it’s tears from others’ pain.
For many it’s dangerous, because it’s hot
For others it’s fun and still others, not.
Evil can destroy, but not if we win;
The evil and the victor are both within...
...AND WITHOUT...
The great potential for change lies within.
But it’s hard enough to change OURSELVES;
Can we ever hope to change anything else?
Let’s CHANGE and GROW and INSPIRE ONE ANOTHER,
To do our best to understand one another.
Maybe we can learn from one another,
Maybe we can TEACH one another,
But by all means let’s dialogue so that we can REACH one another.
Life has many aspects. Which ever ones we see
Let’s advance together towards true prosperity.
Maybe you think I'm wrong and I think I'm right,
But at least let’s advance through listening and dialogue.
Maybe you disagree: so be it,
If we both take even one step
Towards expanding our understanding,
We’re already advancing anyway, so
Let’s DO IT ...LET’S ADVANCE!
A whirlwind of inescapable misery for some
Overpopulation for others
“What about this overcrowded land?
Life full of poverty. Mercy me.
Let's expand our vision towards understanding and empathy.
Should we change or rearrange?
Or should we let go and go with the flow?
Will somebody else fix it one day?
Does it matter anyway?
For some it's destructive, for some it’s bliss.
For some it’s just a waste of extra time and a kiss
For some it’s a profound human sexuality
To others it’s a sign that the end is near.
Which way do you look at it?
Which ever way that is, LET’S GROW TOGETHER
To see what we can see and be all we can be.
And do our best...TOGETHER! ...Shall we?...
...“CAN WE ALL GET ALONG?”...
Can we create Justice in our environment?
YES?
NO?
MAYBE?
NOW?
SOON?
LATER?
Life has may aspects. Whichever ones we see:
LETS MOVE
LET’S START
LET’S GROW
LET’S GO
LET’S ADVANCE TOGETHER towards peace security, a happy life and prosperity...
...SHALL WE?...
Some of us see life from some of these perspectives.
Some of us see life from ALL of these perspectives...
But ALL of us can advance...
SO...
LET’S DO IT!
...JUST ADVANCE... :-)

Comments:Men can be pretentious or, in a word, vain. Men, they say, tend to feign knowledge when they don't have a clue; they let on to have ability when they do not; they pretend to have money when they are broke; and they try to pass themselves off as great when nothing could be further from the truth. Unfortunately, such pretentiousness is entirely transparent to the sharp eyes of women.

history starts again now. people are the future. I love people! :-)
I feel the "O POVO" spirit! I feel like a citizen of the world because I love the people. I agree with Duke Ellington here:
Peace, Buddhess, this Buddh's for you! :-)
Peace Suave and Maggie! :-)
Interview with Duke Ellington:
Diary! Diary! Tears of amrita stream down my face right now. Now it’s Duke Ellington...His music? Of course... but more so His quote The people ARE my people. I was hoping as I watched Ken Bern’s “Jazz” that the quote I was witnessing Duke start on the screen was the one I knew ...” The people ARE my people.
I was floored. Dukes philosophy is mine. Just to see Duke spontaneously and cooly come up with this quote enabled me to have a very singular and special sense of history.
Here’s one of my favorite quotes from music history.
Q: “You’ve been quoted uhh by saying that you write the music of your people as it sounds to you...Now I uh would you like expound on that a bit?
A: “Listen... my people... now which of my people I mean uh, you know I ‘m uhh several groups you know I’m uh I’m in lessee I’m in the group of the piano players, I’m in the group of the listeners, I’m in the groups of people who have general apreciation of music, I’m in the group of those who aspire to be dilletants, I’m in the group of those who attempt to produce something fit for the plateau, I’m in the group of what uh.. oh yeah those who appreciate Buaujolai and um then of course I’m in the um of course I’ve had such a strong influence I’ve had such a strong influence.. of by the music of the people ...the people . That’s the better word. THE people rather that my people because THE PEOPLE ARE my people
Diary I am DETERMINED... I WANT THE EVERYBODY TO FEEL MY confidence and my inspired conviction that the common people are praiseworthy and that there is profound joy in respecting and feeling a bond with all people.
I am so doggone committed. I’m inspired by Duke.
What do you think , people?
Do you wanna join the dialogue? :-)
Peace! :-)

Hi all,
Just want to reiterate and affirm the four freedoms as put forth by Duke Ellington in 1969:
1) Freedom from Hate
2) Freedom from self pity
3) Freedom fear of doing something that would help someone else more than it might help myself
4) Freedom from the kind of pride that would make me feel that i am better than another.
Maybe there are or more than four? i hope you are all well and healthy and that i might make good music with any/all of you. Hi Kenwood.
cheers,

I am in a great mood. There's nothing like community huh? Nothing like friendship and comeraderie . You guyz are my comerades. Tara! Is that you? New name? You are so up these days. :-)I love dialogue. I had a big philosophical encouraging uplifting discussion meeting tonight about the spirit of !NOW!
That is doing my best from now. Not with a negative attitude from the past. But with a positive attitude of self improvement NOW! :-) I rapped my latest lyrics.
Chris thanks for asking about meta-calls... I was born 70% deaf. So I have been telling myself I had to learn sign language for decades... Finally in 1995 or so, I was walking past the ASL school of sign language for the millionth time in my old neighborhood in NYC 23rd street and 6th and I said for the millionth time " Soon I should study sign language"
Well to make a long story short, I finally took baby steps and started my studies.
Now I still study bit by bit.
The meta-calls just came as a logical extension.
IN my video "Just Advance" I include a dancing sign language interpreter, so even the deaf can consume my music. :-)
My playing of drums with one hand came about from me adjusting my hearing aids with one hand without losing the beat with the other hand. :-)
So walking by the ASL headquarters I finally had the spirit of "What's important NOW... and I went in and took "!ACTION!".
It was perfect timing. :-)
Check this out ...I just wrote this 5 hours ago...
(fell asleep wow now it's 12/15/01 8:26AM... OK here is the lyric I wrote 14 1/2 hours ago. :-)
Peace Y'all. :-)

Hi, Kenwood, with furthr look into your "meta calls" I noticed that a lot of the calls are dirived from sign language. When did you get that idea to turn a world known language of the deaf into and bend it and take a few of the signs and help create it into your own musical language? I think it's a great idea. How did it come about?

What a collection of smokin' musicians in the band, Bullock, Brown, Egan, Berg, Hunter, Soloff, Evans etc., etc..... and YOU of course. Great rendition of Teen Town! Don't think I ever heard the entire rhythm section play the head before. Aine and I enjoyed ourselves immensely. The jam session at the Windham hotel the 2 nights I was there was a blast. Roy Hardgrove, James Carter, Larry Wilkins, Lenny White, James Genus, George Thorogood, Prince's drummer (can't remember his name?), and a host of other cats were there. Had alot of fun sitting in, thought you'd show up. Anyway, great to catch you at the festival. Peace and metarhythms. You You know how to make a million dollars playing Jazz? Start with 2 million!

Comments:hello everyone! i'd just like to give a brief testament on the uniting power of drums. the other day the Ku Klux Klan held a rally on the steps of my state's capitol building, in st. paul, minnesota. as a form of non-violent protest, my friend and i had brought along a little portable drum set, some congas, a djembe and a vast array of bells and shakers and noisy things to the counter-rally just across on the capitol lawn. my friend and i set up slightly aloof from the other counter-rally protesters, and started jamming. within minutes a man walked up with a drum and joined us. just minutes after that, a steady stream of people followed the music and joined us in our celebration. it was like, i blinked, and then all of a sudden there must have been thirty people involved in a wonderful drum groove, and at least 300 additional people, watching and dancing. the klan became a non-issue, the focus shifted to unity, and a sense of purpose. what could have been a violent confrontation, elevated to become a celebration of life and harmony. the drums spoke to people, and along with positive intention, our humble gesture created a powerful synergy... you gotta give it to the drummer!!!

Just saw your show last night at the Milky Way; what a show. I especially liked your mixing it up with Falguni and the tabla player (name?); but I was really bummed that you had to end the set so early ( and that other band then spent an hour just setting up!!!). Comments:'Wood',
Greetings to you and all the other groovilizers!! I regret not being able to take you up on your initial offer. I just happened to be surfing, and saw the nice things that were said. Please, allow me to recipicate and really say that I enjoyed seeing your Just Advance tape and the thing I was able to glean from viewing it, is how infectuous your attitude is while playing! It's a beautiful thing to be so intuitively in touch with the beauty of music and allowing it to show! I would like to take you up on your offer. I would like to know if it will serve a purpose of advancing my knowledge of the tools you are offering through the course or are we just talking shop? I am not sure if there is a forum or set of rules to govern what we will discuss. It's alittle unnerving to be called out by the 'master'(!) unbeknownst to the unsuspecting 'pupil'!!! I also hope that you didn't take my inquisitive nature inquiring about your course, in a defensive manner. It certainly was not my intention to do so. Oh, to answer one of your questions, for me the 'Golden Rule' is just the beginning. Hopefully, in our coming dialogs in the future, we will go beyond the basic scope of the 'GR' and embrace the spirit/principles it was originally written to convey.
Peace.

Comments:Thanks for the acknowledgement, Dig, and thanks for listening. Guess I should reiterate what I touched on before...what does the term "Global Citizen" mean to anyone out there in this forum? What does it mean to anyone in this forum to be a citizen of the world? Does it mean to be knowledgeable about other cultures, accepting of other cultures, for one to open one's heart to the possibilities of other human beings, or to just travel a lot? What about the people out there who don't have the opportunity to travel around the globe? Can they still be "Global Citizens", too? To me to be a Global Citizen not only means to embrace everyone in the world no matter what the cultural (or racial, or religious, or gender) differences may be, but to actually get out into the world and creat happy people with my voice. As a singer, it may appear to be an easy task to some. But what about the other musicians out there? What about the other "artists" out there? The painters? The videologists? The writers and journalists? The audio technicians, the designers, the architects, the chefs, etc.? Which brings me to my next question..."What is an artist?" In my opinion, an artist is one who creates...period. Would that not make everyone in this world an artist? So...what is a "Global Citizen" and what is an "artist"? My heart is open to honest dialogue and opinions on these and other subjects of discussion. My heart is open to the world! Till later...peace! ;-D

Funny...I just wrote Your name on my calandar (for June 25th) then I looked at the Just Phrases and my name was there! Yoodig? Thanks for responding to the dancing thing with the respest to people not participating at shows. I have another recent experience to share...I went to see Poncho Sanchez -WOW - my kind of music - at Scullers. NO ONE WAS DANCING - Why ??? I was freaking out in my body ready to explode with Mombo, Cha Cha, Salsa, etcetera. Finally Poncho said, (and I'll be paraphrasing here), "Get Up - don't wait until the last song, because then it will be over!" I was so relieved. I had been contemplating screaming out in between songs, "Does anyone care to dance?" But believe it or not, I couldn't bring myself to stand out that much. I rejoiced in the fact however, that Poncho was watching me and smiling for the rest of the show - I'm sure he knew my request in his heart!
Thanks Poncho...Next time I'll just get up on my own.

I am touched by SEP from Singapore! I have never been to Singapore! Wow! Well I would like to amplify what he /or she said! SEP said HE/SHE felt there should be a section for sayings of kindness... Yes! I agree! Let's follow SEP'S lead and try it...a phrase or sentence of kindness is a Just phase, right? Here and now is the perfect place for a saying of kindness... right Jeff Muzerolle? I think your epiphany about "NOW" is wonderful. Just so happens, my fellow groovists, that I know Jeff. It is wonderful that he has found this idea of playing what's appropriate in the moment. He has a vast vocabulary! Congratulations for seeking just the right words, Jeff...hey, Jeff let's see if we can follow sep's lead... wanna? Why don't we each on this bulletin board say something kind to one person whom we have NOT said anything kind to in the past...hmmm.... seaching....ok: my "JUST PHRASE" GOES TO ...AL RICHARDSON:
Hi, Al, we have never met before, but I'd like to offer you a sincere thanks for inquiring into my online teaching materials. I believe that a "JUST PHRASE" reflects a sense of justice from my heart . I need not wait for someone else to treat me first. I feel that a kind phrase is a just phrase. I love the golden rule, don't you? "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you... :-) I feel that is a JUST PHRASE. It is a wonderful inner directive. I do my best to apply this golden rule stictly to MYSELF. I do not use this rule as an excuse to tell others what to do! :-) Accordingly, I find the most fulfilling just phrases involve the golden rule of ACTION! In this case the action I am taking is to type my most heartfelt just phrases to a fellow grooooovistic groove-alot-osopher: Al Richardson...ON or before June 30th , 2001
I hereby invite you to avail yourself of a free e-mail question and answer session with me on drumming! :-) Please feel free to contact me at yoodig@aol.com and we can schedule it and discuss it... ok?

Comments:Hey Woody!!!!! How r things? All is well for me. I experienced a metarhythm last week! I went to see Col. Bruce Hampton (formerly of Aquarium Rescue Unit). He had a smokin' band; they played a mix of rockabilly/country/blues that had the house goin' nutz. Anyways, I took a step back in my perspective of the moment and noticed that the whole vibe in the room was so beautiful, I cannot put it into words. The musicians were all wearing a smile and having lots of fun and the audience was also 'movin and shaking something automatically' (to quote the great Maceo Parker). I had been struggling recently with finding enjoyment in performing live and I realized that I had been approaching live performance totally wrong. You see, while I was at Berklee, I strived to Just Advance and be the best I could possibly be. I created very high standards for myself and when I was in the shed, I was a perfectionist. This attitude spilled over into the live performance realm of my career. I realized that I must approach practicing and performing differently. Now when I perform live, I play the very best I possibly can, but it is all for the moment. What I play specifically depends entirely on the moment. If the moment calls for a very simple rock groove, that's what I'll play. If the moment calls for a very intricate polyrhythmic pattern in 15/8, that's what I'll play. In a nutshell, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MOMENT. After all, life is just a bunch of moments strung together. I believe that if we can make the most of every moment, we can live full and fruitful lives. YOO DIG?! Yaaay!! Thanks Kenwood, I've experienced a JUST ADVANCE!! Peace and love brother. - Jeff

Comments:Hello Kennwood!!!
Cool talk here! I am Nikolaus from Austria and I am a drum-talk member - and I was at the live-chat last summer. It was very nice. Hopfully, we can set up another chat in the future? I would really love to do it again with all the guys. The site got bigger and bigger all the time!
Since then , I checked out your work. Also there's/was much talk about you on Bill Cobham's bulletin board, which is also one of the finest places in the whole WORLD!
I purchased Pat Martinos "Joyous Lake" and PDB with Jaco and Hiram.
I love "Joyous Lake" it has some of the finest fusion drumming on it! YOU'RE A KILLER! Love the bass-snare drum work especially and the drum sound. Which sticks did you play back then? I think they were very slim.
PDB was quite dissapointing, but not because of the music , which was absolute on TOP ( "Three Views of Secret" is a masterpiece and has some of the tightest drumming on it! Love it!), but the sound quality is THAT bad. Really. Did you ever hear it? You'll agree , I'm sure.
What are you working on currently? Any new Cd plans? Please let me know!
Do you think you will come to Austria sometime in the future? Would be awesome to see you "live".
I have more questions , but I think that's all for now.
I hope I will hear from you soon!!!!
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!
Peace

Kenwood, may I be a bit cheeky and ask a favour? A UK drummer called Pete Riley ( http://www.peteriley.net ) has just embarked on his internet journey, and I've set him up as best I can. Hey cats! (male and female ones) Dig this! I just now experienced a wonderful MET-RHYTHM. ( see the metarhythmic dictionary)
Here it is:
rao: "I am currently taking my percussion classes from Vikku. Yes, he is my Guru
!!
Yes, he and two others (Zakir & L Shankar) were with John Mc Laughlin,
formed the legendary group for contemporary Jazz, namely SHAKTI..."
JA,
rAo >>
KD: "Wow! Vikku is your Guru! whoo hoo congratulations to both mentor and disciple! :-).
This is a wonderful example of a METARHYTHM! I am answering your e-mail at this time and look! This is amazing! I just am right this second listening to MA NO PA by Zakir Hussain from the cd entitled Remember Shakti on Verve Records. I just finished reading in the special thanks section:
" I express my sincere grattitude to my beloved gurus: TH VIKKU VINAYAKRAM , TH Subash Chandran, Zakir Hussain without whom I would have never become a percussion artist..."- V Selvaganesh-
Yaaay! what perfect timing.
That's a rhythm in my life, but it transcends the every day rhythms because of the wonderful synchronicity of human hearts! Yours and mine! So I call it a Meta-rhythm! :-)
Peace! This music sounds wonderful!
Remember Shakti! :-)

Yoo dig! Hi Elizabeth!
In terms of the recent topic of audience /artist relations, When I was in India last year, I was reminded that the audiences in India have a special relationship with the artists... Not only do they share emotions spontaneously with the artist, but they actual count the "tala" (a counting system) so intellectually they are closely linked with the artists art as well. It's beautiful.
Let me share a recent e-mail concerning Indian music with you all...
Hi KD,
Thanks for the (many) replies, that you sent to me !! Regarding the backlog,
that's ok !!
As regards the correction in solfeggio, thanks !! I feel very nice (and
proud) that Indian music system is really globally acceptable. And very
happy to note that you are into Indian percussions, too !!
Hoping to keep in touch with you, for the sake for mutual good !!
Just advance,
rAo >>
Yeah. Just had a tabla lesson. Wonderfull Also I am trading tabla lessons for drum lessons and my friend introduced me to an indian claassical singer who demonstrated sarigam tonight for me...incredible. She was subtle , expressive and beautiful sa-ri-ga-ma-pa-da-ni-sa-
sa-ni-da-pa-ma-ga-ri-sa.
She embellished so beautifully. I shared with her Donna Lee (Charlie Parker) and some jazz harmony and theory. All in all I met some wonderful people tonight. :-) This is Kenwood signing off... peace and together, Let's Advance! :-)

This is a great topic Kenwood! I have always felt that the people listening and/or dancing to live music in the same room is an ongoing communication...Subject to change unendingly as the music progresses - especially with improv stuff. As an audience member I know that I've had to contain myself at times because it seemed like I would have interfered with the sound in the room. Other times I have had to shout out loud because I feel overwhelmed with happiness at something I heard - and at that moment I've seen the musician crack a smile because I know that they knew what I was responding to. I do know what you mean about the jazz shows, the ones that I've attended seem to have this different vibe where everyone is holding their stuff in, I've been moved to dance at Jazz shows before and haven't because I thought it might go against Jazz Show Etiquette or something!

Comments:Hey Groovosophers, there was a comment by someone named Peter which I should like to call attention to. I like it very much. Peter said:
I have always wished that people (especially musicians) would enjoy music as pure sound rather than idolize the musicians performing the music. we are not gods to be idolized but, human beings expressing the human condition. we should let the purity of the harmony and the melody uplift us. Art is all about being enlightened and being uplifted. Not a single creator failed to do this and i believe that we shall continue to do this as creators of art.
That's a nice topic for dialogue I think. Question: What are the merits of idolizing a musician (if any)?
What are the merits(if any) of deeply enjoying the music that musicians make?
Q: Which is better? Idolizing the musician or enjoying the music?
Thanks Peter for making us think. :-)
When I was a teenager in and around 1969, I would play and listen to jazz in small night clubs. During that time, the relationship between the audience and the musician was demonstrably different than it is now in the 00's :-) Every squeak of the sax uttered in cathartic anguish or honest human struggle or joyful ecstacy was mirrored by hootin hollerin squealin and shoutin in equal measure from the audience.
We in the audience would frequently encourage the artist, but we were not objectifying the artist so much as empathizing with the artist.
Many times when I was onstage, I came to view it as natural for someone in the audience to scream after some spontaneous wholehearted effort I put out on the drums...It never occured to me during that time that the scream meant anything other than " I feel deeply and intensely about life just as you do...I empathize with you". Nowadays, when I perform a jazz concert, it seems that sometimes there is no emotion at all from the audience. Sometimes the audience members are trying to transcribe or analyse the music. Other times it seems the audience is judging the quality level of the music. If there is any emotion displayed, it seems nowadays there are many other kinds of screams and shouts that occur. Some of the screams seem to say "I idolize you" others say "I like the way you look."
"You have fast technique"
What if you imagine for a moment coming home after work running to your girlfriend and expressing all the intense feelings of the day which you had not had the opportunity to express up to that point. Would you rather she say: "Darling I feel you deeply! I empathize with you" or " Wow! you're good. You talk fast!" "You look GREAT".
Well? What say ye workagroovaliterous friends?

In terms of the Zendrum, certainly it is another instrument from the acoustic ddrum set. I usually lay it out as follows: RH plays HH and ride sounds and cow bell sounds
LH plays snare and bass drum plus toms. I try to imagine I'm trading 4's with Jimi Hendrix playing a hand held drumset. the far row of butons is nice for tom rolls
I intersperse samples and loops where ever it is convenient. You gotta demo it! It's really great! Check out Bela Fleck for cool inspiration! :-).

Comments:I have been impressed with the Zendrum and would like to know your thoughts on the natural feeling of the instrument. I have not been able to get my hands on one to demo. What type of finger and hand arrangement do you
use for modeling the set. Is it a bit awkward to learn this the Zendrum if you have been playing a set.
Thanks

Comments:I appreciate your response very much. Not a single creator failed to do this and i believe that we shall continue to do this as creators of art. i agree that too much of today's music is filled with anger and sex. ironically I am angered by this. tomorrow's music must be utopian. god bless and take care.

I practice using "Airplay" these days every morning before I leave the house. I am working on 4 stroke ruff recently with feet alone.
When there is the luxury in my schedule, I practice my instrument for many hours and also piano and vocals.
Naturally, often before a big performance I practice with specific musical targets in mind.
Every day of my life I have a specific target of life and human happiness, so I practice bringing out my highest self each morning with spiritual practice.
I find it valuable to practice as in "put things into practice". I do my best not to simply practice for the sake of formality. There is a saying: "There is no need for formality
in a win or lose struggle.
Triumph is achieved through
all-out effort."
In terms of practicing when I'm burnt out, no I do my best not to practice when I'm burnt out. When I'm burnt out I do my best to sleep.
On one occasion, I over practiced before an important engagement, and I wound up with a big headache and a sluggish feeling technique when it came time to do the actual musical performance I had been practicing for.Because I had practiced heartily, but I had not left sufficient time for recovery, I was using primarily red muscle fibers and not enough white muscle fiber. I got through the performance with a Just Advance attitude, and I brought out my highest self regardless, but I made a determination to leave recovery time after extensive practice.
Please don't misunderstand...my drumming now is built on hours of practice. When I was attending Berklee College of Music, I had a habit of practicing often 8 hours per day and sometimes 16 hours per day on weekends.
Fortunately for me, I started at age 8, and came up in a household where constant practice was facilitated.
Sometimes as an adult I have to make myself practice. That's why I use inner directives such as "¡Just Advance!" or "¡Move Along!"( feel free to click on
Just Advance or inner directives on this site)
having a schedule I adhere to helps . In my private lessons I sometimes help people construct 10 week practice routines for themselves with some specific musical goal in mind. I am not in the business of missing my target.
When I am burnt out it is usually at the point where I have no more energy left. I am ready to collapse into a nice restful sleep.
Why are you burnt out? Do you need inspiration?
Michael Jordan used everything for inspiration and motivation. apparently once when He was mercilessly booed, he started scoring fast and early and achieved his career record. So if one can turn a "boo" into motivation, just think of all the other wonderful potential motivation there is in the environment! What ever you do whether its practice ,rest perform or study, together, Mike, let's achieve a Just Advance! :-)
Peace! :-).

n/p... the wholehearted attitude of relentless advance towards victory: that is my secret.
for rolls I recommend the squeeze stroke:
step 1 start in the Ready Position (sticks 1" above the playing surface)
Step 2 extend your third fourth and fifth fingers away from the stick
step 3 raise the stick 15 degrees and let it bounce freely on the playing surface.
Step 4 repeat step 3 but sqeeze the stick suddenly upon the second note such that you play an accented note.
Step 5 repeat step 4 and guide the stick smoothely to 45 degrees, then repeat step 5 over and over again.
Just Advance!

Dear Kenwood
I was wondering if you ever had a great deal of trouble with your weaker
hand, and a few tips or things you did to try and recover.
I have been playing since march this year and have jumped in quite a lot of
time on the drums
and i feel i have been seriously outgrowing my left hand. the technique in my
right is decent, what i mean is it feels natural. I have trouble with rolls,
and just want to catch this thing before it's way too late.

Peter,
thanks for your interesting question about the future of Music. If you chaeck out my video, "Just Advance"
I propose a new level of virtuosity. A level in which we cant help usher in a new age of harmony and consideration and human happiness. Sometimes I feel that today's music is dominated by sex and anger. I believe that the direction of music is changing. For one thing I feel that in the future, musicians will be more concerned with the happiness and uplifting of the audience and less concerned with the superiority, aggrandizement and special priviledge and objectification of themselves and the notes they play. 'what do you think?

Comments:Hello Dear Kenwood and Everybody!!
I felt the pull to check in again, seems like fortuitous timing. I've been meeting lotsa drummers the last few days (hi you guys!!!); I was so happy to be in NYC with my old friend Tor. The music was great; his group Irrepressible Spirit, my brother Omar Kabir played trumpet with Istanbul Orchestra-awesome Turkish funk/jazz, and I just saw a great band, Buzby, who will be at Wetlands in NY Sat night. Hmmmmmmmmm....SAINTS; I am thinking about that. I think that anybody can achieve absolute connection with the Divine, Godliness, BuddhaNature, the Mystic Law of the Universe---IF they want to, if they try. I'll just focus on how one interacts with other people. I try to have true compassion for others and strive to inspire hope in everyone I encounter. When I chant consistently (nam-myoho-renge-kyo) and try to live this way, I constantly have amazing experiences of bonding deeply with "strangers" all around me. In Buddhism, all that matters is what is in one's heart, and taking action. I don't think anybody Makes you a saint, but by helping other people to overcome their suffering, the natural Law of life makes your own life stronger, happier, and more tuned into eternity and the interconnectedness of all. I love you Kenwood!!!!!

Comments:Saints, by definition are persons who are able to be in direct contact and awareness of God. A saint has a higher or pure awareness or connection to God. The Roman Catholic church has a complicated process of declaring someone a Saint. One of the first and last steps are called Beatification and Veneration. In the Jewish faith the Kabbalist declares: "The goal of the Mystic [Saint] is to establish devekut, union with, or, as Jewish mystics prefer to define it, cleaving to God." Saints historically have had powers to heal and perform miracles. Woody I'm not aware of how Bhuddists designate someone to sainthood. Maybe you can elucidate us, LOL!! I believe Bhudda was a saint, yes? Saint Augustine of Hippo was born 354 AD. He is recognized as the greatest thinker and philosopher of Christian philosophy. Augustine was introduced to Neoplatonism by Plotinus. His teachings were similar to those from India. That is self-conscious mind or spirit arises from the transcendent One; from causal mind comes individualized soul. Finally, in the last stage, matter develops. Neoplatonic philosophy teaches that one must search inside not outside if one is to find his spiritual origin. The spirit at the center of man's innermost Self links him with the Universe. Augustine wrote in his "Confessions" how he experienced God through this introspection. I believe one can become closer to God through deep reflection and meditation in the creation of music. How's this for a start to the Discussion of Sainthood? - Ciao, Rich

Let me ask you something. How can I go about hooking up with the big time bands?
SECRET: "GO WHERE THEY ARE AND be kind and friendly" (but please don't forget the oil on your spoon at home : please be responsible). I am sure you can benefit from that. It's up to you, correct?
What do I have to do to get my foot in the door?
practice giving and receiving loyalty from people. self reflect and learn how to inspire loyalty from bandleaders. This way once you get your foot in the door you can make a beautiful lasting wholehearted phenomenon.
Law of averages says you will get your chance! Are you ready Greg? Learn by trying. Will you see the opportunity when it comes? Will you be in the right place at the right time to hear about the opportunities which are occuring to people each and every day somewhere on this wide wonderful globe of ours?
Just keep asking bandleaders if you can play with them. Einstein said 99 times I try and the 100th time I succeed. I hope you try to get detailed feedback from bandleaders and colleagues regarding your tapes and performances.
I hope you constantly self reflect. I am sure you can see your patterns and you can improve with dignity!

On the other hand if you listen to Pee Wee Ellis on the hit single "Super Bad" on the "Star Time " complilation cd by James Brown, you'll hear the single most slammin' and Coletrane esque sax playing I have heard in funk to date.-and this is way back torwards the middle of the 20th century- the 60's! :-) Antoine- yes yes yes faith is everything! my practice of Buddhist faith has shown me ever deeper levels of happiness! :-) thanks for asking! :-) before and after? << Hi,
I just saw you tonight at the Van Dyck in Schenectady,
NY.
Let me just say that your performance, along w/ alex,
othello and the resto f the band completely made my
school vacation better than ever. It was great, and
then seeing you guys just made it amazing. I just
picked up your solo cd from you as well, and it was
superb. I was already digging your skills, due to
your performances on the JAco Video and Live in NY
cd's. BUt your solo's along w/ your dialogue were
just over the top. It is drummers like you that make
us bass players envy the talents and skills that it
takes to be a drummer. My dad, who isn't into music
at all, commented on how amazing you and alex were
together.
Thanks Alot

Comments:Hey Kenwood,
You may remember that I was out in Boston several weeks ago and brought a check for you videos to your apt. The videos are great. I really feel like I’ve learned from them. I’ve been buried here, so I haven’t had much time for drumming for at least a month. But I do have some questions. I noticed that you keep your toms pretty far apart. Does that affect your speed much? Is the kit you were playing on the video the same kit (or configuration) as the kit you used on the Pat Martino CD’s that you’re on? The kit on the CD’s sounds like it has many more pieces. The bass drum rolls that you do seem like a controlled jittering (that I haven’t been able to master). Is that a good description? - or have I missed the point somewhere? Do you use the one handed roll for loud fills? I can’t get it tight for anything above a whisper. BTW Joe Migliaccio, Kenwood actually credited that technique to one of his students.

Would you please elaborate on the one-handed roll technique that Johnny Rabb credits you for: The Freehand Technique. I believe you call it the "6ht Gear Technique".
Could you provide me/us with a brief synopsis? Thank you.

nick Brigandi: yo, at the present I have no plans, to visit
Dallas, except via cd! Nothing Like the Sun (Sting) Life on Planet Groove
Maceo and the Sweetest Days -Vanessa Williams and Live at Montreaux-
Miles Davis are among the better distributed ones along with Pat Martino's
Joyous Lake and Stone Blue...Hmm then there are a couple of albums with
Stanley Jordan (mad genius guitarist) and you can get my solocd "Just
Advance" upon request in this guestbook! Ciao! Oh by the way. The more
important question regarding development is an interesting question.kids
develop in different ways from adults as you know. They surprise us.I
was fortunately looked upon as a child prodigy...my interest in drumming
was really an interest in learning and an excitement about discovery
in general! I was exposed to and learned a few different languages and
instruments in the process. once I exhibited interest in music, the
discipline of piano lessons was pushed on me. I rebelled but later in
life I learned to stive for discipline. My friend Aydin Esen is a virtuoso
pianist (one of my favorites in the world) He experienced the incredible
discipline of a classical training from the earliest concievable age.
It paid off royally ...He is sooo accomplished. We've all heard horror
stories on the other hand about beauty contestants or ice skaters etc
who were pushed too hard. My friend and genius musician Delmar Brown
has a daughter who was singing and playing piano at 6 months...his secret?
He never pushed her, he would always leave the door open when he practiced.
He would leave the keyboards powered on so she could mess around on
them. Jaco had twins, too, you know... Hey let's ask one of them! you
Nick, do you have a question for felix Pastorius? Jaco's son? (He's
my godson). Bye!

Thanks for the reply K, I have a few questions on development
dealing with children. I have twin boys that are 19 months. I have them
listening to Classical right now to develop them. I can tell they both
have "it". One see's me bangin on things and he picked it up pretty
well. I'll play a chop and he'll try to bang it back. The other I think
will play some other instrument. He doesn't seem too interested in drums
but pull out the keyboard or xylophone, something he can hear a tone
with and he goes nuts. What suggestions would you have to nurture this?
I played by ear really young and took music lessons on piano but I was
more interested in watching them and then playing it back like that.
Those lessons didn't work out for me, I couldn't play like that. They
have the ear I just need to teach them how to "get it out" correctly.
Thanks for any suggestions you have.

I have ever heard on that CD (everybody’s great on it). Check out the

Eric Wechter, yes I grip the stick usually between the index
finger and the thumb. I have used the middle finger for a fulcrum and
I have even held the stick on rare occasions between the middle finger
and the index finger when I have gotten tired of using the thumb and
index finger grip. Louder strokes demand I grip the stick harder between
the thumb and the proximal interphalangeal joint.(the joint closer to
the knuckle) gentler passages get played with a grip between the thumb
and the distal interphalangeal joint. I have found the widest range
of dynamics and speed using the thumb and index finger as my home base.
Have you tried the middle finger thang? How is it working for ya? I

Neil, Harmonius Initiative is what you exhibit when you take
the initiative in your drumming life, but you determine to harmonize
with your musical environment! You are exhibiting harmonius initiative
by NOT saying : "Hey Kenwood what should I do next"? You are absolutely
correct in making an educated guess and asking me a more educated question.
Yes you can do EACH rudiment 100 times in a row , when you practice.
Please keep a record of your tempos and go ahead and keep advancing
the tempo over the months...If we have harmonius initiative, we have
synergy with each other and we maximize each others musical power. MUSIC
IS A NON-VIOLENT FIST WHICH CAN HELP CHANGE THE WORLD! Don't you think?

made me go back to the very begining and it was really important to
me. When you showed me how you practice the single stroke I said to
me:"This guy is really serious!" I've never spent so much concentration
to practice a regular single stroke...! In our first private lesson,
you really shaked me. I felt like you were looking at me with a kind
of X-Ray.And you told me some things so deep which made me think a lot
and realize that I should ask me many questions before ask you. It scared
me because I could find many answers by my self. Some time after that,
I had a flamenco gig at Ryles. That day was magic! The band was really
grooving! For the first time I felt that I held the bird in my hands
for the whole night and it didn't go away. The smal mistakes didn't hurt
me as usual, because the Gipsy energy and the groove were so strong!
And do you know what I was playing? Just single strokes! I was playing
like a child! After that, somethings started to change inside me and
some of my questions about feeling, concentration and confidence started
to be answered. Man, music is so fun... and it doesn't have to be complicated...

Hello Kenwood! I took some lessons with you a few years ago
while you were still living in New York. I recently found some notes
that I took and noticed our lesson plan. Unfortunately, we didn't finish
my 10 lesson program before your move to the Boston area. I did however
notice that you mapped out some ideas we were going to eventually get
to (but never did). One was paradiddles and the other was flam accents.
I'm wondering if these notes that you wrote down referred to an application
similar to the single stroke and double stroke exercises that I was
practicing. Do I play paradiddles while counting to 100 like I did for
the single stroke and double stroke exercises? Does the same idea apply
to flam accents? I'm very interested to know how to play these exercises
because the single and double stroke exercises have helped me immensely.
As a matter of fact, other musicians I know comment on how my playing
had improved in all areas since I studied with you!! Thanks for the
inspiration! Neil PS What's "Harmonious Initiative? "

Hey Kenwood, I've got a question for you regarding the fulcrum
with matched grip. I know that with your "ready position" the stick
is held between the first joint of the index finger and the thumb. But
is this where the pivot point is? The idea (albeit an old one) of creating
a fulcrum with your middle finger and thumb has been getting some press
lately. (Due to Neil Peart's and Dave Weckl's adjustment to their grips
as per their lessons with Freddie Gruber. When you do bounce strokes,
do you let the stick pivot from a fulcrum that is between the thumb
and index finger or betweent the thumb and middle finger?

I knew Pat Martino cut you loose on Stone Blue. I could hear
it. You sound free, unleashed. The music benefited from that freedom.
In my opinion, a great band leader knows his boundaries and he/she guides
musicians, rather than dictates to them. Listen, I’m trying to not dominate
your board here. I know you have a lot of other people that want to
post. So, I’m trying to limit myself. I just never had this kind of
opportunity before – where I hear some drumming that I really love,
and bang, I can talk the drummer about it. I want to let you know that
I am going to pick up the 2 CD’s you recommended. I’ve sampled them
some over at Tower on the web. They sound great, especially the bass
and drum grove on Just Advance. I hope you don’t mind if I come back
with some more questions and comments. And, BTW, call me Jerry. Jerry
Troiana sound so clinical.

Jerry Troiana, Pat Martino prepared lead sheets for the band
which did not consist of drum parts. The drum parts were up to me. He
voiced his opinion rather strongly if he objected to what I came up
with , but with Pat I had to come up with the entire conception myself-
even down to whether to play a fusion style -a funkier style a bebop
style- and whether to play straight eighth notes or swing etc. What a
blessing from the universe! Pat Martino's gift to the world is more
profound than many of us appreciate... I love him. He was my first bandleader
when I graduated from Berklee! But don't get me wrong... I enjoyed playing
with groups like Manhattan Transfer, too. At first I felt stiffled and
frustrated by the lack of creative freedom, but then I began to appreciate
the discipline and sheer musical quality of our work together. It was
a challange to play the same fills same beats same tempos every night.
A drumming career is a wondeerful thing which ever way you cut the cake?
may your career be one predominant thing: ENJOYABLE! How? you may ask?...JUST
ADVANCE! :-)

Hi Andrew, in my constructive respectful opinion, Cindy Blackman
and Terry Lynne Carrington are two of the best drummers there are, period-
regardless of gender. I know some other girls that are slammin',too
Hmm I have a student now. Makoto Kamei... watch out for that name .
I like Karen Teperberg and uhh Noisey Mama from Germany, Carola Gshrey
and lots of others. I say u go girl! As a teacher, it seems that sometimes
women excel faster in the area of utilizing the bounce for double stroke
rolls .That is a very imiportant part of drumming. You should hear Heather
Ferguson. like her playing ,too.Oh , and there's this girl from Israel
who is into jazz plus fusion plus heavy metal.Shir Konas is her name.
I notice that the mere mention of female drummers like SHEILA E... (how
come you guys didn't mention Sheila Escovedo... man she galvanized me
with Herbie Hancock, and she played her butt off with Prince, too! slammin'
...she's one of my top three favorites! The mere mention of female drummers
caused a quick response from you guys. Christina Kanders is a talented
educator and drummer/percussionist/bandleader. I was in her exciting
percussion ensemble entitled Sambanditos. Gotta go guys, I am rehearsing
with fellow faculty member here at Berklee John Thomas.Who's that girl
on the west coast Heather Jones? Has anyone heeard her? She has quite
a big reputation. :-)

Lynn Carrington. I love the way that she uses her superior technical

a beutiful tribute to Roy Haynes. She is one of my favorites. What do

Kenwood, hearing about Pat Martino was very inspiring. There’s
nothing like the human spirit. We all need to take a lesson from a guy
like Pat Martino because belly aching is an epidemic now-a-days. If
Pat Martino was a belly acher, he’d still be in a hospital gown somewhere,
and he wouldn’t be producing such great music for us all to enjoy! I
want to ask you Kenwood, how much of your work on the CD was your own?
Meaning, did Pat just leave the drum work up to you, or did he have
specific directions that he gave you? How much freedom do you get? I
did some studio work years ago and they wanted to reduce me to a paint
by numbers role. Screw that! I’m the damn drummer, I’ll decide what
drum bits go where!!!! P.S. I’d answer your question about female drummers,
but I honestly don’t know of any.

Hi Jerry Troiana, looks like we're headed for a nice friendship!
:-) I humbly accept your praise, and, yes, the drummer was having a
great time on "Stone Blue" .You would be too if your very first bandleader
on record, Pat Martino was playing so great after literally a 10 year
recovery period from a brain operation...I mean he didn't even recognize
his own mother after his operation, let alone his guitar!!!! It was
his devoted students who re-taught him his instrument. Wow! He's great!
What a beautiful Just Advance of the human spirit. By the way, that

Also, Kenwood, in addition to my other response to your post,
I didn’t out and out slam Weckl. If you notice, I also said that he
had all of his chops down. The man is amazing in that regard. He’s an
incredible precision drummer. His timing, speed and foot hand coordination
is almost not human. His style doesn’t happen to suit my taste, that’s
all. You play the way you live. You seem to love life, and that comes
across loud and clear in your drumming. When I listen to Pat Martino,
Stone Blue, for example, it’s obvious the drummer is having a good time.

Jerry Troiana, I am really moved by your excited discovery
of my drumming , but I am deeply saddened and horrified by your desrespectful
comments directed at Dave Weckyl. While I advocate for free speech,
I also spend my good time and money on this site to promote a constructive
all out advance of the creative passionate essence of drumming. Not
idle criticism of each other as artists. Take a moment and find, if
you like, some of my interviews in Modern Drummer (listed on this site)
I comment on our tendancy as musicians to "rag" on each other. I feel
you mean well and your kind words warmed my heart, but an advance at
the expense of others is the same old shit: just an advance... on the
other hand, an advance incorporating mutual inspiration constructive
motivation and self relflection? That is a "Just " Advance" don't you

Sam Price, no you are not alone. Guess what ? There are extraterrestial
groovagitilistic metalizers right here on the web site. 90% of them
feel comfortable when they have a solid "footing" .As you described,
sometimes it is easier to groove when your right foot is stable. Playing
heel down stabilizes the foot by anchoring the heel to the ground! There
are also ways to stabilize the heel up technique too. I recommend my
" Staccato Ball Technique" almost all my students from Smitty Smith
to Tony Thompson and Aaron Comess were exposed to it. Look for it in
the upcoming "success stories" in the Just Phrases portion of my site.
My take on all things kick-related is "In the vast Funkateerious delirious

Mr.Dennard, Because of your influence on my music skills
and drumming skills I have been able to consistently keep myself busy
in a variety of musical situations.I have been listening to your various
recordings since 92'(My personal favorite is "TeenTown" from Live in
NY Vol 1.) Being 23 years old ,I have thought about attending Berklee
but that would mean that i could lose my contacts in my hometown (Arlington
VA,WashingtonDC Area). With that in mind i was curious If you would
be available for private lessons? See,I have a few friends in the Boston
Area that I can stay with if we can get these lessons together. Before
I go ,I just wanted to tell you how much your drumming has inspired
me to always play with personality for the song.Wether it be Hard edged
oddmeter fusion stuff ,to a straight ahead -jazz gig or just a phat
groove so people can dance and get funky . That is ,in short words how
your playing has affected me. For that THANKS!!!!! PEACE email phatgroove23@hotmail.com

Kenwood, When you add the video clips, perhaps MP3 files and
maybe do a 'live' online lesson or seminar for pay. Just being able
to dialog with you like this is worth a price. I do have a question.
What do you do away from the drum kit to condition the body for playing?
I find as I am getting up there in age the stamina isn't what it used
to be. I probably need to exercise and stretch more as I did when younger.

Hey Kenwood. I totally agree that we as artists can make people
feel REAl GOOD and peaceful through our musical expressions. In fact,
this is one of the major reasons why I play music. When I was in 5th
grade I played a snaredrum solo during a school band concert in front
of an audience consisting of mostly parents and family members. This
was the first public performace experience for me. The solo I played
was a march-type thing, and I had practiced it for a month before the
performance. I was amazed at how the audience received my performance.
I had never expected the whole audience to applaud as loudly and profoundly
as they did. I felt good during the performance, and after hearing the
applause I could tell all those people felt good too. In relation to
what we are discussing, I would call that a misson accomplished! My
positive energy fed through the crowd. As far as I'm concerned, that's
what public performing is all about! So I totally agree that as artists,
we musicians can help people feel good and establish a peaceful being
in their lives. This world is aching for a more peaceful being, and
I am overjoyed knowing I can make a difference by doing something I
love so much; playing music. Together as musicians we can all help society
achieve a just advance. :-)

Jeff Muzerolle, you made my eyes wet with your story about
Jared. Nice! Especially seeing as how you seriously kicked ass during
your last session with me.Despite your euphoria, you somehow made an
advance of justice by caring about jared.Congratulations.I believe you
created a "Metarhythm. Jared played well as if by magic. You had no control
over his playing intellectually or physically or emotionally, but somehow
mystically he advanced in the final analysis. I would love to have heard
him.Let's continue to set the stage for these mysterious metarhythms
to occur. These are rhythms which transcend themselves. A rhythm which
is played is a rhythm: but a rhythm which is played and which is FUN
is a metarhythm. More than just a rhythm! :-) I agree ,Jeff, the reason
I play is exactly the same. It's fun and it feels good. Now I want the
world to feel good, too: I mean REEEEAL GOOD-and peace- ful and happy.
A deeper kind of happiness which includes tears! I figure if they hear
me play, they can feel good like I do! n'estce pas? What do you think?
Can we do that as artists? :-)

Kenwood, I just read the teaching story found on your website.
I was extremely moved! It reminded me of a student I had while I was
in High School. This was during the spring of my senior year and I had
just received my letter of acceptance to Berklee. Needless to say, my
mind was not entirely on the lessons I had scheduled. However, I had
this one student, named Jared, who was in the eighth grade and had a
learning disability. He had very little self-esteem and I feared that
if I challenged him with difficult material he might lose interest in
his lessons with me. The thing was, this kid kicked ass!! He had serious
chops for his age, and although he was shy and didn't show it, I could
tell he had a serious fire burning in him that was fueled by his love
for playing the drums. On this particular day, he was playing a tune
that he had to learn for the school jazz band he was playing in. He
was totally killing it, except for when he had to solo. He could not
grasp the concept of improvization, and I could totally understand,
given that he was only 13 years old. He was especially upset because
the band conductor and 2 other teachers had tried to explain to him
how to improvize and he just couldn't get it. Now remember, prior to
this lesson, my head was in the clouds filled with visions of how wonderful
my future at Berklee would be. So there I was, watching him play this
tune, not totally attentive to what he was doing, and suddenly, during
his solo break, he stopped playing and started to cry his eyes out.
Obviously, I was caught off-guard. I had never been in a situation like
that before and I didn't really know how to handle it. I tried to tell
Jared that he sounded wonderful and that his soloing is getting better,
but he would not stop crying. After 5 minutes or so, Jared calmed down
a bit and I told him to put down his sticks and grab a chair other than
the drum throne. I could tell he felt uncomfortable and overwhelmed
and by getting him away from the drums he seemed to relax a bit more.
I then started to ask him why he liked to play the drums. After hesitating
he started telling me how he thought it was a lot of fun and it made
him feel good and forget about his problems. He continued to talk about
this, and before I knew it, the hour was up! His mom was at the door,
and he had to leave. I could tell he didn't want to though and I knew
he'd be ok. The following week, I received a phone call from his jazz
band conductor. The first things out of her mouth were 'What did you
tell him? He played a solo this afternoon that was awesome! I've never
heard him play like that before!' After that day, I knew Jared would
be ok and that he had a wonderful future as a drummer. This was back
in 1995 and I recently saw him at Berklee during the 5-week program.
I got a chance to listen to him play and he sounded wonderful. That
whole experience taught me that we all got into playing the drums because
it is fun and it makes us feel good. It is so easy to forget that and
in the past I've gotten to the point that I wanted to just quit. But
all I really need to do is sit back and remember why I'm doing this.
When we can remember why we do something, it makes all the blood, sweat
and tears we put into our advancement worth it.

DEAR Joe Hadacheck, would recommend that you practice "ear
training": just have some one play notes on the piano and you match
the notes with your voice. See if you can tell if the chords someone
plays are major or minor. On the drumset I recommend you get familiar
with many stylistic considerations on the instrument.Perhaps you can
prepare by taking yourself through Mel Bay's modern Drum Set by Frank
Briggs...It also comes with a video. Maybe you can familiarize yourself
with "Portraits in Rhythm" by Anthony Cirone published by Belwin Mills.
see you in Boston! How should you prepare? just save your money and
practice discipline.Listen to loads of music - get excited and devoted
to music. Good Luck- just move forward in your music - don't worry...
congratulations for your seeking spirit and attitude of "¡PREPARATION!"

I am planning on attending Berklee in the fall of 2000 (a
few months after graduating from high school) and am wondering what
you ladies and gentlemen up in Boston are looking for in your students.
Aside from the basics, refined technique, solid time, sharp reading,
open ears and plenty of soul, what are some specifics that you really
look for in a drummer? Secondly, how should I prepare myself for the
study of music at Berklee? I am taking lessons (drumkit, snare, with
a bit of mallet, tympani and hand percussion) from a very talented,
knowledgeable and enthusiastic college professor and ear training and
theory from my high school choir director. I preform about 4-5 times
a month with my high school jazz, concert and (in the fall) marching
bands. Additionally, I am the first call drummer for any community work
(musicals, concerts, recitals, combos). I have recently taken up interest
(perhaps a bit of panic as well) in the piano. I hope to achieve a bit
of proficiency in it by the time I Advance to Boston.

In one of our lessons you asked me to write about the importance
of playing drum music and writing drum music, and this is what i think:
The simplest definition of music talks about the organization ofmelody
and rhythm. With just some drums a musician should be able to play some
music (it self) and not just something that becomes part of some music
(groove, colors...). The conception is diferent and every drummer or
musician should experience it. The next step is writing drum music.
This means that you write down your own musical thoughts, and drums
become part of the writing musical tradition with the posibility of
sharing the compositions with the whole world to enjoy them, study them
and understand them.

Kenwood, Thanks for the e-mail response. As I mentioned, I'd
like to set up a lesson. Are you in New York or Boston, or both? Your
reply mentioned Berklee, which is in Boston. New York is better, if
that's an option. If not, I'll be in Boston in a couple weeks, and I
can check your availability. Thanks!

Harmony ,Music/human relationships. It's not so much a relationship
as it just is one energy. Like in any one given day a b2 may not be
the right tone but it is still inside the structure.Sounds are days
and the sound of every day is not always the coolest progression but
we sure a hell are alive to feel it.Harmony just IS.

About WROG? It`s a really cool definition!!!!!!!!! We have
to teach WROG to the american comunity!!!!!!!!! I`m sure that something
doesn`t work in this country cause people are looking for WROG but, they
really don`t know! If the teachers in the college one day can teach
to the student the mean of WROG,I think that it`s possible have faith
in a better FUTURE! Sometimes.........WROG!

EHY,welcome to my WROG world! The different between armony
in music and relation ship? NO DIFFERENCE! IT`S JUST DIFFERENT THE PERCEPTION
OF THE ATOMIC ORGANIZATION: The human body it`s just frequency....just
like the music but....different positions in the atomic frequency! it`s
not really necessary "watch"to watch..... it`s not necessary "listen"
to ear.... Most of the time we are confuse about wich sense "use FOR....."
Most of the time the language it`s like an "space black hole":everything
inside and........nothing more.... just inside! It`s the same during
the conversation! It`s really hard find someone that can ear you from
the hearth!!! Male or female..doesn`t matter! They can just here you
from them(damned!^_^") mind!! Sometimes! Doesn`t matter if my body have
to finish in some years! the most important think to me it`s the COMUNICATION!!!
MUSIC?WORD?FEELING?A GIFT FOR A FRIEND?doesn`t matter... It`s just write"BEHIND
THE LINES"......just like the MUSIC!!! THANKS KENWOOD FOR YOUR SO GREAT
LEVEL OF COMUNICATION! LET`S ADVANCE TOGHETER!

12-1-98 Hey Illonart1: I got absoloutely zero quality sleep
in the beginning of this week; but I am totally happy with what I did
while I was awake! I performed on The birthday tribute in New York for
the late Jaco Pastorius, led by trumpeter Miles Evans! I met with 15
of my best friends in the music business-geniuses all-I met with Jaco's
son(my god son-HI FELIX THIS SMILE IS FOR YOU-CONGRATULATIONS ON PLAYING
YOUR AXE OFF) I traveled with my computer whiz bass playing best buddy
Nofretbass.when I got back home to Boston, it was 8:40 AM...I can't
believe I made it through the morning rush hour and to the college perfectly
in time for my 9:00 AM private student.Plus I had tons of inspiration
to offer him-I am so psyched and stoked from this memorable event.-
peace out! Just advance! : )

IN REFERENCE TO PAOLO'S COMMENTS BELOW: I THINK EACH OF US
HAS A LITTLE "WROG" IN US DON'T you think so ( sorry for yelling lol)
Any way, yes let's add WROG to our english vocabulary : WROG: an emotional
state in which one feels he has made a mistake, but is humbly determined
to look at the positive side of it and advance lightheartedly ...hahaha
what do you think? I think it's a cool defenition?... Am I wrog? does
anybody else wanna suggest any "JA words"? New words for encouragement
for advancing human happiness? :-)

hi there... i`m pier paolo,i`m an italian drummer and i`m
living in Boston:i wanna say thanks to Kenwood for a special lesson:
some month ago(may),i was a big fun of Kenwood, and i just called him
to say:hi Kenwood,i`m a big fan of you and i wanna take a lesson from
you cause i`ve an IMPOSSIBLE problem to solve! He was so GREAT,and reply
to me:ok, we can meet tomorrow,is it ok? You can immage? Just 2 minutes
before He was just The Man that i eard since when i was a child(do you
remember Brand X,or Jaco live in Tokyo,or Sting,or............so ...you
know...he is really THE MAN!) I went to the lesson, and he teached me
"his approach to the american grip"called THE READY POSITION!! The READY
POSITION,can help you to develop more fulcrum on matched, you can play
every stroke with the same volume and never dragging ,never start to
be tired! Just one hour a day for one week, and you can discovery:HOW
TO GO ON THE MOON WITHOUT THE SPACE SHUTTLE!!!ah,ah,ah My IMPOSSIBLE
problem was: i played 4 time a week in a funk band here in Boston, for
2 months, and my fingers(especially the third)was really tired and in
pain! I remember that i had to play 2 nights after the lesson!I was
really warried about ,but with the READY POSITION,i started to play
in a new way:the new it`s in the minimum weight on the stick(just a
good fulcrum...but for the best instuctions, just ask to Kenwood!! I
can remember me play like ever in my life: everything was under control(the
sound, the time, the stroke, and especially the attitude to the New technique!!
You can trust in me:i`m an hard worker: i won a scolarship for the M.I.
in Los Angeles in the `94,i`m teaching at UNIVERSITY OF MUSIC IN ROME(you
can find it in the web, with an altavista research engine, and you can
find my name), i finished my program with Gary Chaffee.............soon
you can find me in some special gig.............i can tell you.....
Kenwood it`s really a special teacher:you can ask to guy like Dennis
Chambers!!! Every great drummer love Kenwood, cause he is not just a
drummer:he maked a special history for the drums, but i think that you
know that he can play with an amazing attitude every instruments!!!
Stop to talk.............JUST ADVANCE!!!!
